Rakovica

Rakovica is a small place located in the southern part of the Karlovac County, in the immediate vicinity of the Plitvice Lakes National Park. The first records of Rakovica go back into the Middle Ages. Historically, it has been renowned for the Rakovica uprising during October 1871, which was led by Eugen Kvaternik. The uprising was an unsuccessful attempt to establish the free Croatian state.

Travellers visiting this region or passing through shall be greeted with beautiful landscapes, hospitable people and famous Rakovica cheese. The area of Rakovica is an important tourist destination in continental Croatia. The beginnings of tourism activities in the private sector appeared in the late eighties with the popular renting rooms in Rakovica, so called "Zimmer frei". Vicinity of the Plitvice Lakes which is a world's known natural phenomenon, as well as the main state road towards the sea, at that time provided a sufficient number of tourists who were looking for accommodation in Rakovica and stayed no more than one or two days. Today there is mainly private accommodation in Rakovica to be found.

Thanks to the wealth of cave systems and pits this municipality has excellent conditions for speleology tourism development. Korana canyon walls are suitable for so-called soft-climbing and the lower part of the Rakovica area is suitable for hiking and biking which is perfect for sports and recreation enthusiasts. Hunting enthusiasts will be happy to go bear hunting, which we don’t prefer; however, we do prefer to have a venison goulash for dinner! You can hunt wild boars, rabbits, or game birds. And later you can enjoy yourself in one of the restaurants in Rakovica. Local ham and cheese, excellent Lika lamb and veal, venison stews, local polenta and corn bread - all these mouth-watering dishes of this region can be enjoyed at the local restaurants in Rakovica. After a proper meal, make sure to visit the Plitvice Lakes National Park, the city of Karlovac and Slunj.

Rakovica is all about relaxation, wellness and walks in the woods. Activities like tennis, meditation, tasting specialties of Lika cuisine, biking, and horseback riding are the most common ones in Rakovica. If you are looking for nightclubs in Rakovica, you won’t find them; however, people usually seek fun at the local pubs in Rakovica or in nightclubs in Karlovac.

Healthy climate, almost untouched nature, excellent water and hunting grounds will make your visit to Rakovica a truly hedonistic experience.
