Račišće is both a small village and a bay located on one of Croatia's most beautiful islands - Korčula. Korčula itself has a lot to offer while Račišće is Korčula's well-hidden secret. Situated only 12 kilometers from the Old Town, Račišće is accessible by an asphalt road that begins in the Old Town. Račišće also has a somewhat historical significance as it contains a couple of archeological sites of Roman buildings.
Accommodation in Račišće is mostly private. However, as Croatia's tourism industry began developing over the years, a small hotel emerged in Račišće. The hotel is called Mediteran and it represents everything that Račišće is all about. The most well known fact about this particular hotel is its terrace. The terrace of the Mediteran Hotel in Račišće is a favorite meeting place for the local folk where they love to gather, have coffee and just comment on their day-to-day activities.
There is one tradition in Račišće that still hasn't died out and probably never will. This is somewhat a national sport and it represents the islander's favorite past time. The sport is called "boche" and it revolves around throwing iron balls around one small ball. The winner is the person who throws the ball closest to the central ball.
Sailing in Račišće used to be one of the main sources of income for its inhabitants while fishing was the secondary source of income. At the beginning of 20th century, the local fishermen had a fleet of about 40 beautiful wooden sailboats. When they set sail, it looked like a pirate expedition. Not only were they beautiful to look at but also they seemed like the beginning of a wonderful tradition in Račišće. Unfortunately, soon they were dismantled and replaced by bigger modern boats, which were used to sail around the world.
Beaches in Račišće are plentiful and carefully decorated with crystal blue sea and white pebbles. Račišće is perfect for a romantic getaway, as it feels isolated and rarely stumbled upon. Korčula itself is quite peaceful and serene while Račišće could very well be considered as the meditative center of Korčula. The harbor in Račišće is beautiful and definitely worth a visit.
Entertainment in Račišće is concentrated around walking, biking and exploration. The place is intertwined with small roads and little hills so it might seem a bit fairytale-like at first. When discussing food in Račišće, be sure to take a casual stroll through the vineyards and olive gardens and breathe in the essence of the Mediterranean.
