On the southwest side of island Čiovo, connected by bridge (via ancient Trogir) to the mainland, the Okrug County is located. To be more exact, there are two Okrugs – Okrug Donji and Okrug Gornji. Name of these two lovely Dalmatian villages comes from the Croatian word "circle" as both sites are arranged along a circular bay on the west side of the island.
The entire island is full of sandy and pebbly beaches, ideal for families with children, but also for those who prefer hidden bays just for themselves. Countless small coves and beaches, sunshine and clear blue-green sea provides a unique opportunity to enjoy swimming and sunbathing in peace and quiet, far from all the stress and crowds and traffic jams.
Lovers of active vacation can choose from the wide variety of activities in Okrug Donji. If you like scuba diving, water skiing, paragliding or spending time at the gym and maybe tennis courts, you will be happy. As a perfect companion to your active schedule in Okrug Donji, there are a bunch of beach bars in case you get thirsty or wish to start a party all the sudden.
Plenty hours of sunshine during whole year have made this area one of the most attractive tourist destinations. There are many restaurants in Okrug Donji, particularly Dalmatian taverns and restaurants with a rich selection of local specialties. Fresh seafood can be found everywhere as well as organic home-grown vegetables. You will be surprised to see so many events that include ‘fishing festivals’ or ‘fishermen’s nights’. These are organized several times during the summer and are accompanied with folk songs, delicious seafood dishes served with home-made wine and a plenty of song. These Mediterranean specialties are an integral part of the rich gastronomic offer of the Okrug County.
Okrug Donji is proud owner of a beautiful view of the archipelago, the islands and the islands of Šolta, Veliki and Mali Drvenik. Of course, daily trips are organized and if you wish you have the possibility to visit these islands. The vicinity of Trogir, which is under UNESCO protection, provides an opportunity to enjoy numerous sights of almost 4000 years old city. As for other trips, you can visit the Krka National Park and its famous waterfalls, then the town of Split which is also near, or if you are religious, you might wish to pay a visit to Medjugorje, located in neighboring Bosnia and Herzegovina (100 km).
