Novi Vinodolski is situated on the northern coast of the Adriatic Sea in the region called Kvarner. It lies in the south-eastern part of the Vinodolska valley on a steep hill above the moth of the river Suha Ričina. The first time it was mentioned was in 1288 when Vinodolski zakon (The law of Vinodolski) was written. Many famous intellectuals come from this city like the Mažuranić family from which Ivan Mažuranić was a writer and the first Croatian ban. Today there are about 5 500 inhabitants in the city. The city is 30 km from the airport on the island of Krk and 180 km from the airport in Zagreb.

Novi Vinodolski is full of cultural monuments from the past. In the historical core of the town, the walls are partially preserved on the northern and the southern part of the town. On the coast there are remains of the old city Lopar and the church of the Virgin Mary with the ruins of the Pauline monastery from the 15th century.
One of the most famous monuments is the Vinodolski zakon from the 13th century written in the Glagolitic alphabet.
