The island of Rab is situated in the northern part of the Adriatic Sea, in the region of Kvarner. Unlike other islands in this area, Rab has a relatively small number of cities, to be exact there is eight. All of them are in the vicinity of the sea and are therefore considered tourist destinations. They are all built in the south-west direction to be protected from Bura (a very strong wind). The island has about 9 000 inhabitants. It is interesting that the number of people increases all the time. The main industry of the island is tourism. Rab was mentioned for the first time in a book of travels of a Greek geographer Pseudo Skilaks. According to some remains, there used to be settlements in this area. These remains date back to Greece and it is very likely that it was a Greek military colony which was founded in the 4th century BC. The most known person on Rab is St. Marin who founded the State of San Marino.

The island Rab offers all types of accommodation like hotels, villas, pensions, apartments and rooms in private houses. Most hotels and campsites belong to the biggest company Imperial but there are also other bigger and smaller, newly renovated hotels. If you have a vessel, two ACI marinas offer everything sailors need. Today, Rab has about 2000 beds in hotels, 1700 in tourist resorts, 17 000 in private rooms / apartments on Rab and 6000 places in camps. There is a naturist beach on the island, Kandalora, which is situated on a peninsula Frkanj. Rab is very popular among divers because of its extraordinary underwater beauties. Those who are interested in diving course can apply to one of many diving clubs.
What to see – sights on island Rab:
The majority of monuments are situated in the city of Rab. The most impressive monument is the belfry of St. Mary built in the Romanic style and it is 27 meters high. The Benedictine monastery and the church of St. Andrew date back to the 11th century. The church of St. Justine was built in the 16th century and today it is a museum of sacral art. The City Lodge was built in the 16th century and it was used as a court room but today it is a place of painters. Trips are organized to the city park Komrčar and the hill Kamenjak. The most popular events are Music Nights in the church of St. Cross and Rab Knight games which are held two times a year.
Where to eat
If you like trying authentic food you should visit Barbat, a small place in which hosts will offer you home made goat cheese, wine and honey. Very interesting is also Topolino, a farm household which is specialized in home made specialties like cheese, pršut, bread, wine, fish and salad from the garden. You can also have dishes made of lamb, octopus and fish. Among these, there are numerous restaurants and fish restaurants which offer local sea food specialties and other agricultural, ecologically grown products. Another specialty of Rab is the cake of Rab which can be found in most bakeries.
