Vir is an island of the Adriatic sea located north of the city of Zadar. It is connected to the mainland by a road bridge. The only village on the island is the eponymous village of Vir, with a population of 1,608 (the Wikipedia knows everything!).

Vir beach

Vir is situated 26 km away from Zadar. It is one of the 300 islands of Zadar archipelago with whom it shares the natural beauty. It lies in the northwestern part of Dalmatia. In historical documents Vir was first mentioned in 1069 in the Bill of King Petar Kresimir IV, known as the Mare Nostrum Dalmatikum (written in the presence of King Petar Kresimir IV Great in then royal town of Nin).  In the Bill, Vir was mentioned by the name of Ueru , or Vera, which scientists speculate to be of the old-mediterranean origin, meaning pasture.

With its favorable position in the heart of the Adriatic, its indented coastline with an abundance of natural sandy beaches and pine forests, it is ideal for a family vacation. Those of you who are seeking party and excitement can look for entertainment options in nearby Zadar or the island of Pag and its famous beach Zrće.

Being close to old Croatian royal town of Nin and 3000 years old Zadar, Vir is great place for historical sightseeing.  You can explore the area and its rich history or take a short trip to Kornati national parks that have over 200 little islands. You can visit Plitvice lakes and Krka waterfalls or climb the mountain of Velebit and explore Paklenica.

With this kind of climate Vir is an ideal destination for lovers of sailing and surfing.
