The Kvarner bay is located in the northern Adriatic Sea, between the Istrian peninsula and North Dalmatia. The city Opatija, just outside Rijeka, became one of the most popular tourist destinations in Croatia already in the late 19th when the Austrian imperial family was frequent visitors.
The main islands within the Kvarner are Cres, Krk, Pag, Rab and Lošinj. The main portion of the Kvarner Bay is that between the mainland, Cres and Krk. A smaller body of water located between Cres, Krk, Rab and Pag is called Kvarnerić ("the little Kvarner").
The main city of Kvarner is Rijeka, the third largest city in Croatia, do to the deep waters in the Kvarner gulf; it has naturally evolved into one of the most important harbour areas in Croatia. As in Opatija, the influence from the Austrian Empire is easily recognisable on many of the historical building in the city centre.
Cities and Island Visit for a holiday
Lovran situated 6 km along the coast from Opatija, is another city which was popular among the Austria Hungarian nobility. The backbone of the economy in Lovran is tourism. The Comfortable hotels, beautiful old villas and private apartments are all packed with people in the main season. The seaside promenade in Lovran, where Konaba’s / restaurants are located side by side, is an open invitation for a walk along the Kvarner bay.
Opatija is situated 14 km up the coast from Rijeka, the city is among the most beautiful in Croatia, numerous hotels, build by the Austrian Hungarian empire in the late 19th century, are situated along the Riviera in Opatija, most of the them have been completely renovation during the last years. Private accommodation is available in many of the beautiful villas on the hill cascading down to the city centre.
Island Cres is the largest / second largest (Krk is same size) Croatian island. The fairly large island has a population of only 3.000 people which are living in small villages around the island, the main city Cres is a beautiful small fishermen’s town, which is an excellent spot for a relaxing holiday. Once you get there you will see that the town was there before, we all got cars!
Island Krk as mention above Krk is considered being one of the two largest islands in Croatia, the island is connected to the mainland with a Bridge just south of Rijeka. Holiday guest can stay in numerous small settlements around the island or in the main city Krk, most common accommodation form is private apartments.
Mali Lošinj is the larges town on the island Losinj, the city stretches a long a bay till it connects with its “bigger” brother Veli Losinj, in earlier days Veli losinj use to be the bigger of the two cities, but in the beginning of the 20th century Mali Lošinj open a shipyards for Motorboat, the increases the population rapidly. Post war the city was constantly expanded the tourist offer with new Hotels and Resort, which has ensure a constantly increase in the number of tourist.
Crikvenica is situated 35 km down the coast from Rijeka, the city was declared a health resort already in 1906 and a few years after if was announced to be the most important resort on the Riviera. Today Crikvenica is modern tourist resort, with nice beaches, hotels and of course lots of private apartments.
Island Rab is situated south of the island Krk, the island can be reach with ferry from the mainland cities Jablanaca and Rijeka, as well as with ferry from the islands of Krk and Pag. The main tourist centre is the city of Rab, which among other has a beautiful old town.
Island Pag is well know among young people for the parties at the Zrce beach in Novalja, but the island is also an excellent spot for a family holiday, both the cities Novalja and Pag has large variety of tourist offer, hotel are limited but there is plenty of private accommodation to choose between.
Other cities and info for a holiday in Kvarner
Holiday houses with pool is a rarity in the Kvarner region and hotels are (except for in Opatija) also not that common as in Istria, but in terms of private accommodation, apartments, studios etc, they Kvarner area has the whole range available.
The culinary speciality of the area is the Lamb and Cheese from the Island Pag, which has a special salty taste, do to the high concentration of salt on the island.
